Happy new year! There’s lots of exciting things happening at the Bamfield Community School Association this month, including some new programs and fun events!

🥳 The Friday Night Chill, a chance for youth 12+ to hang out, enjoy games and music, access safety planning and harm reduction supplies, and eat pizza, is on Jan. 6th!
🏀 Basketball is back every Tuesday night for ages 15+. All-ages basketball will recommence in March.
🧘‍♀️ Need a little re-centering after the holiday season craziness? Drop-in Yoga is every other Wednesday from 5-6pm.
🏋️‍♂️ Come get sweaty in a fun and supportive work out environment! Drop-in Circuit Training in the BCS gym will alternate with Yoga every other Wednesday from 5-7pm.
📖 Come share your love of reading with the kiddos at school every Thursday from 1-1:30pm.
🧸 Wee ones and their guardians are invited to Little Buddies Playtime on Thursday Jan. 19 – join us for stories, sing alongs, crafts and play!
🤾 DODGE! DIP! DUCK! DIVE! DODGE! Come try a night of free dodgeball on Monday Jan.9th, and get inspired to form a team for our Dodgeball League, running from Jan.19 – early May.
🍝 Mark your calendars for a Community Lunch on Thursday, Jan. 26th! Charlene is planning a delicious and nutritious meal for us to enjoy, and we encourage you to stay for Reading Buddies. $10/adult, proceeds will buy new books for the library!
🐟 Youth 12-30 are invited to join the Bamfield Aquaculture Program for fun field trips and interesting workshops to learn about local biology and ecology, food sovereignty, and potential job and economic opportunities in our community.
🥞 Come to the library for Books and Brunch on Jan. 28th! We will enjoy tasty waffles and a delightful storytime, and you can borrow some library books to enjoy at home!

Reading Buddies is Back!

Every Thursday at 1pm, starting Oct.27th, community members are invited to the Bamfield Community School to share their love of reading with the students! Volunteers will be paired with students, and will have the opportunity to read children a story, or provide encouragement while being read to by a student.

No registration is required. Please arrive 10 minutes early for your first reading buddies for an orientation to the program!

We are Hiring a School Lunch Caterer!

The BCSA is seeking a passionate chef to prepare daily lunches for the 48 students of the Bamfield Community School!

Applicants must be dedicated to serving healthy meals to the students, and must complete Food Safe Level 1 and a Criminal Record Check for the vulnerable sector. The BCSA is happy to support applicants to receive the necessary qualifications.

The Lunch Caterer will receive $1500/week for wages and groceries, and is responsible for planning, grocery shopping, preparing, and serving healthy meals in accordance with Canada’s Food Guide. The Lunch Caterer has an opportunity to educate the students about nutrition and a healthy diet, and to be a supportive adult in the lives of the awesome children and youth at the BCS.

Hand Built Pottery Workshops!

Are you ready to get creative with clay? Join us at the Bamfield Community School to learn how to hand build and glaze pottery with Julie Bradley from Sea Star Ceramics! Over 8 sessions, students will make 3-5 glazed stoneware pieces to take home – a platter, a soap dish, a bowl, and 1-2 mugs.

The workshop series will cost $225, which includes instruction and the use of tools and equipment. Funds raised from adult programming allow us to offer programs for children and youth free of charge, and we appreciate your support! The Bamfield Community School Association (BCSA) works to enrich the lives of youth, families and adults in our growing small community of Bamfield and Anacla. We are an independent organization based in the Bamfield Community School. We offer a variety of educational and fun programs and services in recreation, literacy, health, wellness, and community development. bamfieldcommunity.ca

Bamfield and Anacla are located on the stunning west coast of Vancouver Island, in the heart of
Huu-ay- aht First Nations’ Traditional Territory. The community is home to a small, but diverse population with a high level of civic engagement – many services found in larger centres are offered here by dedicated volunteers. Surrounded by ocean and forest, it is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts and armchair naturalists alike.

Role Overview

The BCSA Coordinator provides overall leadership to the programs, activities and projects of the Bamfield Community School Association. Our programming includes several perennial activities (ex. provision of daily school lunch and monthly community lunch program via a contractor, public library and computer access point, afterschool club and summer day camps, gymnasium access for sports and fitness groups) and other programs according to the needs and interests of community members (ex. seniors’ programs, cooking classes, adult upgrading, workshops in health, gardening, art etc). The role requires excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and the ability to work independently. The Coordinator makes the daily decisions regarding the operation of the organization and support staff, with oversight from a Board of Directors.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Coordination of literacy, wellness and community development programs independently and under direction from BCSA Directors
  • Facilitate inter-agency cooperation in the delivery of services, recreational, cultural and non- curricular educational programs.
  • Collaborate with community resources/organizations and the Bamfield Community School staff to facilitate the integration of those resources into the regular school program, where welcomed by school staff.
  • Build and maintain positive connections with the community’s youth, families and adults.
  • Become familiar with the social and economic structure of the community, identify community needs and interests and facilitate the development and implementation of programs, services and activities to meet those needs.
  • Promote full utilization of the publicly available Community School facilities (library, computers, gym, atrium etc); ensure maintenance and security of School District and BCSA assets.
  • Report to and consult with BCSA Board of Directors regularly, including written and verbal reports at monthly Board meetings. Maintain an up-to-date understanding and positive working relationship with the Association for Community Education in British Columbia (ACEbc) on behalf of the BCSA, including attendance at their annual conference.
  • Manage all aspects of corporate finances, including budgeting, payroll, fundraising and financial reporting.
  • Hire and supervise BCSA staff (generally 1-2 Assistants and 1 Lunch Program Contractor) and short-term facilitators for individual programs.

Qualifications of Ideal Candidates

Ideal candidates are independent and creative with the ability to maintain our baseline operations and to develop new initiatives to meet the needs and interests of our diverse community. They will possess:

  • Undergraduate degree or 2 years experience in a related or administrative role, including experience in:
    • Financial administration
    • Event coordination
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills
    • Ability to prioritize and multitask, effective time management skills
  • Experience with the not-for-profit sector and grant writing
  • Excellent computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office Programs
  • FoodSafe Level 1 Certification (or willingness to obtain)
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License (Class 4 is an asset)
  • Basic First Aid certification (willingness to obtain)
  • Ability to pass a Criminal Record Check
  • Basic knowledge of Quickbooks accounting software and payroll experience is desired

Regular Full-time position
Salary: Based on experience
Benefits: $2500 towards Professional Development per year, 2 weeks paid vacation + paid week off during winter break.
Reports to: BCSA Board of Directors, a group of dedicated community volunteers

Spring has sprung! Here is the BCSA Community Calendar for May 🌷🌳🌞

Little Buddies Playdate continues at the school from 1:30 to 3:30pm on Mondays

Dodgeball League starts at 6:30pm on Mondays – we have recently opened it up for $2 Drop-in from 6:30 – 7:30, so come check it out if you are interested!

NEW – BCSA Kids Creative Corner begins on May 10th and runs for 6 weeks on Tuesdays after school, for kids and teens ages 8 to 15. Contact Renee at BCSAASSISTANT@GMAIL.COM to register your creative kiddos.

Drop-in Yoga continues on Wednesdays, led by the wonderful Jaslyn in our BCS Gym. This is available to all by donation, doors open at 5:15, class begins at 5:30pm.

BCSA Kids Creative Corner!

Are you ready to get creative?!

Kids ages 8-15 are invited to sign up for a six-week after school program, run every Tuesday from May 10 to June 14. We will be planning a huge array of creative projects, games, and endeavours, with lots of projects to take home and admire!

The fee is $60 per child for 6 weeks. We will operate a punchcard system, and payees will be reimbursed at the end of the course for any classes that were not attended. The fee includes a healthy snack, supplies, and instruction and fun with BCSA staff and volunteers. We have arranged transportation home on the bus at 4:30.

New! Drop-in Dodgeball

Curious about our awesome BCSA Dodgeball League? Can’t commit to a regular gaming schedule? No problem!


We are now offering $2 drop-in on Monday nights for anyone (ages 15+) who is interested in checking it out.


The first hour of scrimmage (6:30 – 7:30pm) is a fun, eveyone-in style of play. At 7:30 we switch to scheduled matches for paid league members. If drop-in attendees are interested, there may also be opportunities to sub in for absent league members!

Pottery Classes, Round 2!

Following the success of our first pottery classes earlier this year, Julie will be hosting another round of classes on behalf of the BCSA!

Participants will be at the school on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30-8:30pm to learn the basics of handbuilding. Please contact Renee at bcsaassistant@gmail.com to register.
